in September 2010 Nominees, Spread Your Warmth

After a quick recess we are back at it with the September edition of Sweatshirt Blanket’s Spread Your Warmth campaign. The first nominee was have on deck is the Humane Society of Harford County, Maryland.

The Humane Society of Harford County promotes the humane treatment of homeless, stray and abandoned animals by providing shelter, care, adoptions, spay/neuter programs and community education. Their vision is to end pet overpopulation and tovadvocate and educate for the humane treatment of animals.

Foster Care Network

The Humane Society of Harford County receives over 5,000 pets each calendar year. Unfortunately, they have the dilemma of too many pets and not enough space. One very important program that helps to significantly increase pet adoptions and decrease the euthanasia rate is their foster care program. Foster families provide a temporary home (usually 3-4 weeks) for pets who are either sick, injured, too young to be adopted; or if space becomes an issue at the shelter

Phoenix Fund

In 2002 The Humane Society of Harford County was involved in rescuing a ten month old black Labrador puppy who had been hit by a car and had both hind legs broken. Through their efforts, and that of The Aegis, more than enough money was raised to save this puppy’s life and pay for the specialized treatment it needed. Using a significant amount of remaining capital The Phoenix Fund was established for the emergency care of stray and abandoned pets.

Safe Haven

Safe Haven for Pets is a collaborative program offered by The Humane Society of Harford County, Inc. (HSHC) and the Sexual Assault/Spouse Abuse Resource Center, Inc. (SARC) and endorsed by the Harford County Sheriffs Office. Anyone leaving a situation of domestic or sexual abuse to relocate themselves, their children, and their pet, may shelter their pet through the HSHC while they seek help through Safehouse Services.

Thank you to Shellie Duffy for nominating the Humane Society of Harford County for the September edition of Sweatshirt Blanket’s Spread Your Warmth campaign. If you would like to learn more about this cause visit their website.
