in August 2010 Nominees, Spread Your Warmth

Our next nominee for the August edition of the Spread Your Warmth campaign is the Suncoast Hospice. They are the the nation’s largest not-for-profit, community-based provider of hospice and palliative care.

The Suncoast Hospice provides care for tens of thousands of people annually, and leads innovative service delivery, social change advocacy, technology development and other end-of-life initiatives. Their goal is to help each person in our community find quality of life and live each day with meaning and purpose.

This organization traces its root back to 1977 when it was established as the Elizabeth Kubler Ross Hospice with 50 volunteers. Four years later they were granted their official state license (the first year that Florida granted hospice licenses) and they served 40 patients. By 1992 the Suncoast Hospice grew to 600 volunteers and 345 employees who serve 600 patients.

In 2006 the Suncoast Hospice opened a new community service center in St. Petersburg and is approved by the state for hospice residence in Palm Harbor. The organization boasts 3,000 volunteers and 1,250 employees who serve 2,400 patients a day.

Since their inception the Suncoast Hospice has served 17,000 patients and touched 200,000 lives. Their volunteers have served over 260,000 hours in service to patient care representing over $11.5 million of uncompensated care for their community.
