in August 2010 Nominees, Spread Your Warmth

The third nominee for the August edition of Sweatshirt Blanket’s Spread Your Warmth campaign is the South Shore Longhorns Football and Cheer Program.

They are a 501c3 non-profit, all volunteer organization, providing youth football and cheerleading activities for the South Shore Community of Hillsborough County, Florida. South Shore Longhorns, Inc. was founded in 2007 as part of Pop Warner Little Scholars and the Tampa Foundation for Youth Development (FYD).

The objective of their organization is to enrich the lives of the children in our community by promoting scholarship, sportsmanship and physical fitness.

The kids in their program range in age from 5 – 15 and in their first year they have 150 children participate. By their third year they had grown to more than 400 children. In that short amount of time they became the 2nd largest football and cheer program in Hillsborough County. As part of their effort to ensure that all interested children have the opportunity to participate in youth athletics, they have provided over 21 scholarships this year.

Their volunteer coaches and staff work tirelessly to enhance our program, attending many hours of training and certifications at their own expense. Additionally, the importance of academic excellence is stressed through the monitoring of grades throughout the school year.

By combining their commitment to physical education and academic achievement our organization strives to create a community of children who will develop into productive members of their community, willing to give back to the next generation.

The South Shore Longhorns teams have the ability to advance in local, regional and national competitions.

In 2010 their teams have earned the following recognitions:

  • 2010 FYD Cub Division Flag Football Super Bowl Champs
  • 2010 FYD Bobcat Division Flag Football Super Bowl Champs
  • 2010 Grand Finale Recreation Division National Cheerleading Champs
  • The Pee Wee Football team was one of two Tampa Bay teams to win the privilege of playing in a half-time game during a Tampa Buccaneers home game.

The South Shore Longhorns are funded solely from registration fees, local business donations, and fundraising efforts through their logo merchandise and snack shack sales.

Thank you to Denise Panepinto for nominating the South Shore Longhorns Football and Cheer Program for the August edition of Sweatshirt Blanket’s Spread Your Warmth campaign. If you would like to learn more about this great organization visit their website.

I do not live near here but I passed the word on several websites and email groups I am on simply so SAVE could not win. I see we have accomplished that goal which makes me very happy. I am also glad that as a result children will denefit. SAVE only hurts children by denying the turth about domestic violence.
