in May 2010 Nominees, Spread Your Warmth

Our sixth nominee for the May edition of Sweatshirt Blanket’s Spread Your Warmth campaign needs no introduction. It is probably safe to say that at one time or another cancer has touched each of our lives.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.  Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, the ACS has state divisions and more than 3,400 local offices

The American Cancer Society was founded in 1913 as the American Society for the Control of Cancer (ASCC). This group was started by 15 well-known doctors and business leaders in New York City. The start of this group was a very important event in the history of public health.

In those early days, cancer was rarely mentioned in public. The disease was steeped in a climate of fear and denial. At that time cancer claimed 75,000 lives a year in the United States alone. The Society’s founders knew they had to raise public awareness if progress was to be made.

If you are interested in getting involved, there are a number of ways to do so. You can participate in any number of events such as the Relay for Life, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and DetermiNation. You can also choose to volunteer your time.

Thank you to Judith Musick for nominating the American Cancer Society for the May edition of the Spread Your Warmth campaign. If you would like to learn more about the American Cancer Society or their mission visit their website.
