in May 2010 Nominees, Spread Your Warmth

While voting for April’s nominees is still in full swing we are marching on with our slate of May nominees. Our first nominee this month is Andy’s Army.

Andy’s Army was created in memory of Andrew Glenn Butler who was diagnosed with Type I Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) in March 2009. His battle with SMA ended on June 4, 2009, when he was just 20 weeks old. Together, his family and friends are committed to sharing his story and spreading the word about SMA.

Their mission is to raise money for Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (FSMA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. FSMA is dedicated to advancing research and supporting families by eradicating SMA by promoting and supporting research; helping families cope with SMA through informational programs and support; and educating the public and professional community about SMA.

SMA is the number one killer of children under the age of two and is estimated to occur in nearly one of out every 6,000 births. Here are some other facts about SMA:

  • SMA children with the most severe form often face quickly increasing muscle weakness, leading to paralysis and death.
  • The gene mutation that causes SMA is unknowingly carried by approximately 9 million Americans, making it the second most common autosomal recessive genetic disorder.
  • Some statistics show SMA to be TWICE as common as ALS/Lou Gehrigs.
  • There is currently no treatment and no cure, but the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) selected SMA as the disease closest to treatment of more than 600 neurological disorders.
  • Carrier testing is a simple blood test, and it is readily available. Please ask your doctor for testing if you plan to have a child.
