in April 2010 Nominees, Spread Your Warmth

Our second nominee into the Spread Your Warmth campaign, SIDS of Illinois, comes to us from a good blogger friend of mine, Weasel Momma.

SIDS of Illinois was founded in 1968 by parents who had lost a child to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) as a way to help create a peer support system for newly bereaved parents. As research breakthroughs occurred that identified behaviors that can notably lower the risk of SIDS, SIDS of Illinois expanded their mission.

Reorganizing themselves as a non-profit in 1992, SIDS of Illinois became active participants in the struggle to eliminate or reduce the incidence of SIDS and other forms of infant mortality through education and research. Since then they have developed and sponsored numerous campaigns to educate parents, health care professionals, childcare providers and the community at large about SIDS and infant mortality risk reduction strategies.

They have also expanded their bereavement services to better support all those that are affected by the tragedy of a baby’s death: parents, siblings, friends and childcare providers. Services are provided without regard to age, handicap, race, color, creed, religion, sex or national orgin. Additionally, their services are provided without any requirement for legal residence.

More than 2,100 babies still die each year from SIDS in the United States at the rate of approximately one baby every four hours. Many of these deaths, however, are preventable.

SIDS of Illinois’ organizational goals are to:

  • Reduce infant mortality by decreasing the incidence of infant deaths due to SIDS, accidental suffocation, overlay, entrapment, metabolic disorders, and other accidental causes.
  • Improve the quantity and quality of comprehensive, family-centered bereavement services for those impacted by a sudden pediatric death.
  • Train professionals throughout the state who are likely to encounter cases of sudden pediatric death to better assist newly grieving families.

Thank you to Weasel Momma for nominating SIDS of Illinois. If you would like to learn more about SIDS of Illinois, SIDS, their mission or to make a donation, please visit their website.
