Our latest nominee in the Spread Your Warmth campaign is cranioKidsidaho. This organization was founded in 2009 by Kerrie and Fletcher Harris who faced challenges when their son, Micah, was born with metopic craniosynostosis.
As you may recall from our earlier profile of CAPPS, craniosynostosis is the premature fusing of the sutures (fibers) that connect the free floating bone of an an infant’s skull, which restricts skull growth. These sutures are designed to allow the infant’s head to pass through the birth canal and allow a child’s skull to grow with the brain in early infancy. As a result, children born with craniosynostosis may have increased pressure on their brain and vision problems.
There are a number of forms of craniosynostosis depending on which sutures of the skull have become fused. In case of metopic craniosynostosis the metopic suture begins are the nose and continues upward to meet the sagittal suture. Metopic craniosynostosis results in a narrow, triangular forehead with pinching of the temples laterally.
It has been 10 years since Micah’s surgery and thankfully things are going well. Because of their experiences the Harris’ felt the need to help other families, especially in Idaho, as they embarked on this new journey with their children. Despite the resources available, they still believed that families with this specific problem are often times left to figure things out on their own.
cranioKidsidaho was founded to provide waiting room care bags for families of children with craniosynostosis as well as provide emotional support to moms, dads and extended family. They also like to provide meals for the families, run errands for them and even help with hotel rooms for families during their journey.
Thank you to Kerrie Harris for nominating cranioKidsidaho for the Spread Your Warmth campaign. If you would like to learn more about cranioKidsidaho or their mission join their community.
